"Sell me this pen"

is the most galactically ridiculous

interview question. Here's why:

Sometimes, salespeople are better at INTERVIEWING for the job

than actually DOING the job.

This question is as old as it is stupid.

When you ask a question like this during the interview process, you only learn:

👎 Does this person know the answer to the question

👎 Can they be compelling, gregarious and entertaining.

What you DON'T learn is if this salesperson ACTUALLY behaves this way on sales calls.

Learning Lessons:

When interviewing salespeople, ask them BEHAVIORAL BASED QUESTIONS like "Tell me about the last time you closed a tough sale, how did you do it?

And reserve "Sell me this pen" for a COACHING EXERCISE after you've trained them on doing Discovery at your company to see if they can show you what they learned.
